For most people by far and away the most difficult part of SEO optimization is getting enough high quality links to their website to make it rank.

The problem you basically have, is that links are generally worth about as much to you as the level of effort required to get them, meaning that if they were very easy to obtain (on the internet, not from people you know) and unless they’re naturally given because of your amazing content they’re probably mostly useless.

1. Link “Asset” Optimization

The first thing I always recommend people do is to use their own networking and resources immediately before looking outside of your circle, you would be amazed at the amount of clients who several months into a campaign mention that their sister runs a major PR7 blog or they have 3 other sites they can link from, “do we think they should” ? :) etc..

Think about friends, relatives, contacts, people you met once, anybody that you know, that has any type of web presence, who could be talked, cajoled or persuaded to:

  • ideally write about you and link to you
  • just link to you

..with no cash passing hands obviously, as we don’t want to upset Google by paying for links.

2. Competitor Link Analysis

You can spend months and years just building run-of-the-mill links, directories, blog comments, link exchanges etc, and get nowhere. Don’t bother messing around with any of those, analyze your competitors link profile (using  proper SEO tools which identify the best and strongest links, and try to get those first.

Often if your searches are not super-difficult to compete in, just steps 1 & 2 here are enough, otherwise proceed on to..

3. The rest..

  • Blog engagement / commenting – befriend and be nice – DONT SPAM!

    • finding relevant (to your site’s subject) and leaving high quality comments with your link back to your site helps both traffic and if the blog is not “nofollowed” can help your site rank better.
    • More often than not though if you engage in conversations and befriend the blogger, they will at some point link to you, or maybe invite you to guest post on their blog, and you link to yourself (subtly) from your post.
    • link to them, WordPress’ trackback system will alert them of this and they may reciprocate at some point.
  • Quality article writing and submission

    • High quality articles (quality is key) can still be a decent source of links, embed your links in it, and submit it to  1 or 2 top article directories.
  • High Quality Directories – yes there are still some, and they do still help.

    • Look for quality looking related directories, don’t worry about pagerank, look at the other sites in there, quality or not. Also check SEOMoz list in the (Pro) Tools section for a list of directories that still count.
  • Swap Links

    • a link profile with too many reciprocal links will likely not help you these days, but a few is fine and will add to the mix and domain diversity. Look for similar sites in different business cachement areas who wont see you as a competitor and email them INDIVIDUALLY, not using automated software. You will quite likely pick up some decent links this way.

Ok thats enough for today, I hope this will be helpful to someone.
